Skate or Die

Monday, June 21st, 2010

Shooting skateboarding can suck sometimes. Like yesterday when I headed out to shoot an ad for Quiksilver. I arrived at the ICC in Durban to meet skater Braxton Haine. He was busy filming some technical lines for tv so I decided to get Khule Nia to attempt a drop / gap I spotted. The shot looked like it was gonna be epic. I got set-up (having to trespass to place my flash where I wanted it) and then got Khule to try kickflip the gap. Apparently we sounded off the fire alarm and as a result security clamped down on us before Khule got to land the trick. So now I’m stuck with a cool photo and no where to place it. Well, this is where blogs can come in handy.

Japan vs Netherlands

Monday, June 21st, 2010

On Saturday I got last minute tickets to the Japan vs Netherlands game. I was all about supporting the Dutch due to my Ginger heritage but quickly switched to shouting for Japan once I saw how into their get-up they were. Here are some shots of fans.. friends shots to come next…

Anna Savage is all Heart

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

This is Anna Savage and she is a qualified chef by trade. Although now no longer a chef by profession, she still has her fingers dipped in pies but of the creative indie flavour.  She’s a co-founder of the I Heart Market, one of six people involved in the I Heart Durban Parties as well as a founder in the soon to open Unit 11, an indie / electro DJ Bar where you can eat popcorn, play ping-pong and hang with friends. On the side she writes food pieces for publications and has a steady passion for crochéing and I’m pretty damn stoked I can get to say I know her. Thanks for the tea party Anna!

King B

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

I met Nathan Redpath aka King B through his younger J.P. when he was throwing down hammers on his skateboard. Hammers being a metaphor for gnarly, high pain prospect acts of rolling creativity, aka, big rails and gaps. I’ve known them for a while now and they are highly creative folk. JP through video and music and Nathan with his Redpath Music and performance roles with extreme sport comedian and all-round strange cat Aaron Mcilroy.

Anyway, last night was the Jack Parow gig with Spitmonkey at Origin (that post still to come) and I shot this photo of Nate DJing upstairs before the show. Went for an oversharpened / illustrated look, which although outdated already works so well with the lighting.
