The Life Of Birds

Saturday, August 29th, 2009

David Attenborough is the king of Narration hands down. Slow Saturday today, just the way I needed it. TV overload due to good content. Planet Earth, Life of Birds and I’m Not There. On Life of Birds David talks about the flight of Pelicans. Got me remembering a shot I took in Namibia once. Ever seen what a Kiwi is like? If ever there was a bird halfway through evolution it’s that… half bird, half ? Where’d those wings go and why you just brown eye-ing the whole time?

PELICAN

Indigo

Not so long ago I was commissioned to shoot Tony Hawk’s visit to SA as part of the Laureus Foundation’s Sport Development program. First stop on the list was Indigo Skate Camp in Valley of 1000 Hills. Before he arrived I had some time to walk around the place and shot these few snaps. I’ve always loved the setting out there. Anyways if you want to read up more on his trip click here

First Time Dave

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

I’m busy assisting Durban based photographer Sean Laurenz all the while getting some work off to Session Skateboarding Mag for their 7th Birthday edition. One of my submissions is the DC Relentless Progression Comp that went down last month at Wave House. In the editing process I came across this pic of Dave Morrisson who heads up Iron Fist in Durban with his wife Brie. I’ve known Dave for years. He’s one authentic lad and a great person to know. Anyways, I like this pic.

Dave Morrisson is slicker than Morrissey - he still skates!

Missed Powder By A Day

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

Damn it! Sometimes things just don’t work out in your favour. Blessings in disguise? Not sure if I believe in such things. Things are what you make them is what I’m going to roll with.

This past Saturday while shooting the Fox Pro Am at Giba Gorge I got a call asking if I wanted to head down to Tiffindell to shoot the Miller Ski & Snowboard invitational. How could I pass that up? Problem was I had one day to get all my shot together, source some warm clothes and recover from a drastic hangover thanks to Durban’s always rocking I Heart Durban parties. No small feat.

To cut a long story short I left Durban at 3am on Monday morning, survived the eight hour drive, shot photos of the following two days whilst snowboarding in between. Unfortunately I left the day snow arrived and I bet everyone there is currently having the most amazing time bombing some powdered peaks. Snowboarding really isn’t like anything else and I’d like to thank Nicola, Piere and Liam for such a great time.

PS. If you ever go to Tiffindell, make sure you absorb how rad the little town of Rhodes is. It’s a gem.

She ain’t heavy…

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

So this is the first post on my new blog. I’ve ditched my old Blogger one of yesteryear and will now be using this one full time. Once again a BIG thank you to Dave McMillan for making code poetry. Stoked you’re here to check it out and hope to tempt your eyes coming back to see my latest photographic exploits. Now, on with the show…

Pixie Bennett was kind enough to let me shoot a couple of portraits of her for my portfolio. I had a concept in mind which as it turned was similar to another shoot she had just done. They never ended up using those pics though and so we went ahead with this. I’ve had quite a few queries as to whether she is lifting off or if it’s staged. If I told you she traded David Blain the levitation trick for vocal lessons and that the balloons are just a prop would you believe me?
