GMT has your children

Thursday, March 17th, 2011

GMT is the new school of entertainment in Durban and the fellows involved are doing an astounding job of making vests the norm at the jol. In all honesty though the GMT events are a breath of fresh air amidst the stale stench of Durban popular nightlife. Two weeks ago, Red Bull hosted the finals of their DJ battle at the Bat Centre Harbour Jazz Cafe. Fruit and Veggies warmed the crowd up before the showdown between DJ’s Nighvision and Blque Soul (winner). Here are some shots from the evening.

RAMfest Durban

Monday, March 14th, 2011

Here are some shots from Wednesday night at Wave House. Die Antwoord should have headlined in my opinion being the world dominating force they are! As Yolandi Vi$$er had to say : “be happy”

Die Antwoord

Wednesday, December 29th, 2010

The Red Bulletin asked me to shoot a piece on Die Antwoord when they played at Wave House this month for the Sonic Summer Tour. There has been a lot of hype around this Zef act and all I can say is that the show they put on is f’n amazing. True performers delivering a bite to match the bark.

HAIRLIP MADE ME DO IT

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

The sensational 80’s cover band HAIRLIP asked me to fire off some last minute press pics. Any chance I get to work with these guys I snap up in an instant. We have some plans for a comprehensive photoshoot in the near future but for now here are some shots of the group on the Durban beachfront from last month. Check out their site and get to their next gig..

Turn It Loose

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

The past month has hands down been the busiest time of my life! Not that it’s a bad thing but deadlines have meant I haven’t been able to get to my own things like this blog. There is so much stuff for me to now post up here in the next couple of days so make sure to swing by soon. For now I just wanted to chuck up this image of American Red Bull B-Boy Roxrite who is out in South Africa promoting the screenings of Turn it Loose a documentary following the lives of selected B-Boys preparing and competing in the Red Bull BC One series. Check out the trailer on the link above, the film is amazing!

For this shot I took him to the Muti Market in town… if only pictures could convey smells!!

King B

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

I met Nathan Redpath aka King B through his younger J.P. when he was throwing down hammers on his skateboard. Hammers being a metaphor for gnarly, high pain prospect acts of rolling creativity, aka, big rails and gaps. I’ve known them for a while now and they are highly creative folk. JP through video and music and Nathan with his Redpath Music and performance roles with extreme sport comedian and all-round strange cat Aaron Mcilroy.

Anyway, last night was the Jack Parow gig with Spitmonkey at Origin (that post still to come) and I shot this photo of Nate DJing upstairs before the show. Went for an oversharpened / illustrated look, which although outdated already works so well with the lighting.

RAMFEST

Friday, March 5th, 2010

Last Friday I flew into Cape Town, signed on as a Red Bull Photographer (more on that soon) and then headed straight to Worcester to get Ramfaced at one of the best music festivals I’ve ever attended, Ramfest. I got to see bands I’ve been trying to see for ages (Lark, The Narrow, Taxi Violence, Dirty Skirts etc) and man alive was I stoked on how good the acts were. Here are a few snaps I shot. Off to Pro-X now.. adios…

They didn’t start the fire!

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

With the whole aaighteeez revolution in full swing it’s only fitting that a band would rise up and be it’s voice. Enter HAIRLIP! Nothing short of a phenomenon, these boys and one girl know how to get Emperor Qin’s Terracotta Army jumping.

They will be playing a one night show at the Barnyard Theatre (Gateway) on November 2nd. Not sure if the Barnyard knows what it’s in for but I’m stoked as it meant I got to shoot a press photo for them. This shoot was real last minute but I’m pretty stoked on how it came out. Check out HAIRLIP and be rekindled with the neon love party that was the eighties. They didn’t start the fire but they’re sure as hell fueling it.

She ain’t heavy…

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

So this is the first post on my new blog. I’ve ditched my old Blogger one of yesteryear and will now be using this one full time. Once again a BIG thank you to Dave McMillan for making code poetry. Stoked you’re here to check it out and hope to tempt your eyes coming back to see my latest photographic exploits. Now, on with the show…

Pixie Bennett was kind enough to let me shoot a couple of portraits of her for my portfolio. I had a concept in mind which as it turned was similar to another shoot she had just done. They never ended up using those pics though and so we went ahead with this. I’ve had quite a few queries as to whether she is lifting off or if it’s staged. If I told you she traded David Blain the levitation trick for vocal lessons and that the balloons are just a prop would you believe me?
